How to Calculate GST

GST calculation depends on whether the amount you enter is before GST or already includes GST. The two common calculations are GST exclusive and GST inclusive.

GST Exclusive Calculation

When an amount is GST exclusive, GST is calculated on the taxable amount and then added to it.

GST Amount = Taxable Amount × GST Rate ÷ 100
Total Amount = Taxable Amount + GST Amount

Example: If the taxable amount is ₹10,000 and the GST rate is 18%, the GST amount is ₹1,800 and the total amount is ₹11,800.

GST Inclusive Calculation

When the displayed price already includes GST, the GST component can be separated from the total amount.

Taxable Amount = Inclusive Amount × 100 ÷ (100 + GST Rate)
GST Amount = Inclusive Amount − Taxable Amount

Example: If the final price is ₹11,800 including 18% GST, the taxable amount is ₹10,000 and the GST component is ₹1,800.

GST Calculation Formula

The basic formula for calculating GST on a taxable amount is:

GST = Taxable Amount × GST Rate ÷ 100

To calculate the final price after adding GST:

Total Price = Taxable Amount + GST

For a GST-inclusive amount, the taxable value can be calculated using:

Taxable Amount = Inclusive Amount × 100 ÷ (100 + GST Rate)

GST Calculation Examples

The following examples show how GST is added to different taxable amounts.

Taxable Amount GST Rate GST Amount Total Amount
₹1,000 5% ₹50 ₹1,050
₹1,000 12% ₹120 ₹1,120
₹1,000 18% ₹180 ₹1,180
₹10,000 18% ₹1,800 ₹11,800
₹10,000 28% ₹2,800 ₹12,800

What Is GST?

GST stands for Goods and Services Tax. It is an indirect tax applicable to the supply of goods and services in India. The applicable GST treatment and rate depend on the nature and classification of the particular supply.

Because GST rates can depend on the goods or services involved, users should verify the applicable rate for the specific transaction before preparing a tax invoice or making a tax-related decision.

CGST, SGST and IGST

GST may be divided into different components depending on the nature of the supply.

What is CGST?

CGST stands for Central Goods and Services Tax. It is the central component applicable to qualifying intra-state supplies.

What is SGST?

SGST stands for State Goods and Services Tax. It is the state component applicable to qualifying intra-state supplies.

What is IGST?

IGST stands for Integrated Goods and Services Tax. It generally applies to qualifying inter-state supplies.

For an intra-state supply where a combined GST rate is applicable, the GST may be divided between CGST and SGST. For example, at an 18% combined GST rate, the components can be 9% CGST and 9% SGST where that treatment applies.
